I let it go for far too long and finally got around to updating bookcreatives.com last night. I’d been meaning to for quite some time, but clients always come first for me – and I’ve been a very busy boy.

It’s not quite finished as you can see, but I needed to get a move on because my shiny new, state-of-the-art web server goes online later today and I want to begin migrating to the new server next week!

A big thanks to Issara Willenskomer for graciously furnishing some of his design elements that I used in the new header.

I’ve developed several author websites/blogs in my time for clients, but writing has never been a strong suit for me, and although I’m always coming up with new business ideas, I never seem to get around to Read More | Comments

At a time when the prospects for independent publishers hasn’t been very rosy, along comes Dzanc Books with a simple philosophy that may reverse that trend:

Dzanc Books is looking for literary fiction that takes chances and does so with great writing. We do not mind books that do not fill a marketing niche. We are looking for absolutely fantastic works to fill those slots. It really is all about the writing to us.

Dzanc prints ink-and-paper books, but that’s about the extent of the traditional aspect of their operation. Founders Dan Wickett and Steve Gillis, along with their staff, work virtually online and conduct most of their business by email; employing internet-based strategies to promote their titles that relies heavily on viral marketing, and avoiding expensive traditional advertising.

Chuck Norris vs PenguinThis past November Penguin published “The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 facts about the World’s Greatest Human” – a parody that pokes a little fun at Norris’ tough-guy image. Mr. Norris has usually been good natured about these “facts” and has made a soft drink commercial that capitalizes on their popularity, and more recently, a political endorsement for Mike Huckabee that in itself perpetuates the schtick.

Apparently, Mr. Norris has had a change in heart and has decided to sue publisher Penguin, feeling his name and likeness are being exploited, and that these mythical facts now somehow “Wrongly portray him.” Which of course they do, but that’s the nature of parody – a parody he himself encouraged.
